Examining the Transition to the K-12 Curriculum for Music Education in China

The Chinese government's Ministry of Education is in control of supervising the country's public education system, which is run by the state. As part of what is known as the "nine-year mandatory education," which is funded by the government, everyone is required to go to school for a total of nine years. Six years of basic education begin at age 6 or 7, followed by three years of junior secondary education, or middle school, ages 12 to 15. The Curricular Reform for Basic Education also known as Experimental, henceforth referred to as the "Compendium", together with 22 curriculum standards for compulsory education, was issued in June 2001 by the Ministry of Education (MOE). It described the reform plan in nine aspects: evaluation of curriculum, reform goals, standards of curriculum, learning and teaching style, the advance of teaching materials, organizational and curriculum structure, and management, and the teacher training. Beginning in the first grade and continuing through the tenth grade, music was introduced as a regular topic, and a senior high school arts and design track was developed to prepare students for future careers or higher music education aspirations. In terms of curriculum structure, subject content, classroom time, and language instruction style, this study compares the framework and current condition of formal music education in the K-12 curriculum to the basic education curriculum of 2002. After changes from the Basic Education Curriculum of 2001 to the Secondary Education Curriculum of 2019, the K-12 Curriculum adapted to the international basic education cycle of 13 years. This reform creates new learning spaces that highlight 21st-century skills. Music has gotten additional classroom time in music instruction since its introduction in Grade 1.
